20 acres ~ 360 degree mountain top views ~ Log home ~ $799,000

First, I received an email this morning from a friend with a pdf attached.  From what the pdf says, the C.O.B. power plant is a thing of the past, it has been pulled as they no longer have any plans to build it anymore!  That should come as a great relief for many of us in this area.  Sure, it will mean there will not be the extra revenue to the country they expected, but it will help preserve our surrounding area.

I just hope the new bio-fuel center they are talking about is friendly to the area and not suck up too much water.  That could help replace what C.O.B. would have brought to the party.

Next, it was announced about a week ago, that Costco is finishing up a traffic study at a site in Klamath Falls, to build a new store.  While it is yet another big box coming into our town, it will at least give Wal-mart some competition.  As I have posted before, at this current time, Costco provides somewhat living wage for their employees.  This will at least give a bit back to the community that companies like Wal-mart just such away.

The last rumor I heard was that it would be open in 2009. I would expect it to be on the of the big box stores offered in the new development at the Washburn / Southside bypass area they are trying to get approved.

Supposed to find out by April 2008 for sure.

Any updates on the costco project? I would be interested to know if they will go in near the Fred Meyer on Washburn. Have they made any progress?

No word yet, but I would expect it to be announced next March when the list of stores that will be launched on the Washburn / Southside bypass project are revealed. The lot next to Fred Meyer just seems too small for Costco given the typical size of store they have and their parking lot.

It's March 28th, and sadly I read in the recent Herald and News that Costco is going to build a new store FIRST over in Salem or some other place along I-5. Not us - AGAIN !!! We desperately need 'living wage' jobs here. I moved here from Northern California in search of 1) affordable housing (which we found), and 2) a lower-cost lifestyle (which we have also found -- IT'S CALLED POVERTY AND FOOD STAMPS ! NO JOKE !)

Klamath Falls, and Chiloquin, where I live, are counting on tourism and affluent folks from The Running Y to fill some of the gap.......but most tourist jobs don't pay all that much.

I like living here, despite the snow, but WE NEED MORE AND BETTER JOBS ! Affluent Californians moving in and buying those new houses over by Altamont area isn't going to fuel our local economy here all that much -- except for construction jobs, etc. And now we're back in a recession, and foreclosure madness. UGH !

Yeah, I read that that too. How sad! Actually, I think they said Roseburg which is pretty small too, but they are close to other large metro areas, we have 85 miles to the nearest store :(

Yep, it is and has been since the mills were forced to close many years ago, a retirement town. They keep hoping to bring more people who are retiring to our area and expecting them to need health care and spend their money around here.

Many years ago, they officials sold out our mill industry with a promise from the goverment to keep them funding if they backed measure to force our mills out. They did and the government followed through, but now are dropping the support. So, it appears finances are an issue again but no one can touch the lumber for the most part and there are no other major industries that employ large numbers of people. This county is in a hard place for a while.

The old lumber mills paid a good wage for unskilled labor, but now all those good jobs are gone. Not sure what the plans are to bring better jobs here, but not landing companies like Costco which pay a pretty decent wage surely will not help.
