20 acres ~ 360 degree mountain top views ~ Log home ~ $799,000

Well, at first blush it looks good enough.  If the lens does a good job, the zoon of 20X should be pretty hot.  Depending on version, shooting HD video is also a plus.  Curious if the view finder is improved, the one on the S5IS is pretty much unusable.

I was hoping they would have shot for at least 12 MP instead of 10 MP (so yesterday).  Of course, I would love to see their 28 MP version in this camera, but that is really dreaming.

One last thing, I was a bit disappointed that they did not increase the size of the LCD.  I was hoping for at least 3” instead of the small 2.5” screen.

Oh well, I doubt I will update from my S5IS any time soon.

After spending a while around the forms and searching for information on motion detection scripts, I found a few things that might be of use to those who are new to CHDK.

First, check out this PDF CHDK End-User's Guide, it is really handy!  I only wish I would have noticed it in the beginning :)

About motion detection scripts, the scripts often referred to for lightning are the "lightning x" (where x is the version).  While different versions of that script exist around the forms, the latest one, version 9 was deleted by its author (along with all his other posts), but there is a script which has more powerful features which easily replaces those earlier scripts.

When the above script detects motion, it can:

  • Click a single shot
  • Click a burst of shots
  • Trigger video capture for a period of time

This can be handing in many areas, but the one that got my looking at it in the first place was for Lighting.

It is amazing to me, as being a software developer, that these inexpensive cameras can actually run scripts.  How wonderful is that!

NOTE - In the form links above, you need to be a registered member (free and easy) and logged in to see the file attachments.

If you happen to have a S5 (or s3 among other Canon models) there is a utility firmware that you can run inside your camera and many new cool features to your camera such as storing RAW images!  One of the parts I am the most excited about, being a software developer for almost two decades, is the ability to write scripts that run inside my camera and automate some functionality.  Here is a starter:

After a bit of browsing though, it appears if you are using a memory card greater than 2GB, you will need to go through some extra steps.  Here is an excellent step-by-step post on how to handle large cards:

I have yet to try this as I do not have a card reader that works with my large card, but I am ordering one :)

BTW, it seems I am not the only one excited by the ability to take decent pictures (his better exposed than mine though ;)):

I thought this was an unusual shadow.  The Elk and the Shepard's hook cast a shadow that appears to me as a man fishing:

After spending years with my old .85 megapixel (Yep, .85) Olympus digital camera that I paid $1,100 around a decade ago:

I went out and purchased the Canon Powershot S5 IS.  Yep, I know they will probably put out a new version over the next couple of weeks to the next couple of months, but this one has most of the features I need for a good play camera.

Here is a blog that helped my finalize my choice after weeks of digging  up online resources:

What Fun!

On my first evening with the camera, I had some fun.  One of the shots that impressed me was the moon, which I shot at the 12x zoom plus the digital 4x zoom, free handed with the lens shaking all over the place.

That is not bad for an inexpensive point and shot!

There will be many pictures coming along in the future when I have time to play!
