After spending a while around the forms and searching for information on motion detection scripts, I found a few things that might be of use to those who are new to CHDK.

First, check out this PDF CHDK End-User's Guide, it is really handy!  I only wish I would have noticed it in the beginning :)

About motion detection scripts, the scripts often referred to for lightning are the "lightning x" (where x is the version).  While different versions of that script exist around the forms, the latest one, version 9 was deleted by its author (along with all his other posts), but there is a script which has more powerful features which easily replaces those earlier scripts.

When the above script detects motion, it can:

  • Click a single shot
  • Click a burst of shots
  • Trigger video capture for a period of time

This can be handing in many areas, but the one that got my looking at it in the first place was for Lighting.

It is amazing to me, as being a software developer, that these inexpensive cameras can actually run scripts.  How wonderful is that!

NOTE - In the form links above, you need to be a registered member (free and easy) and logged in to see the file attachments.

I also notice that many of his commands are commented as "maybe not needed". I hope they aren't removed. For example, being able to choose the color channel to detect on, would be a huge asset when wanting to trigger the camera by a red laser light and have it ignore some other light sources.
